UPS Buying Guide: Protect Your Equipment from Power Surges
Learn about VA ratings, backup time, and AVR technology to choose the right UPS for your setup.
Choosing the Right UPS
To choose the right Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), add up the total wattage of your devices, divide by a 0.8 power factor, and add a 20–30% safety buffer. Select a standby model for basic home gear, a line-interactive unit with Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) for fluctuating utility grids, or an online double-conversion UPS for sensitive servers.
VA Rating
A VA (volt-ampere) rating measures apparent power in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) . It shows the total electrical load the UPS internal electronics can handle. You should pick a UPS with a VA rating that is1.2 to 1.3 times higher than your total device loadto allow room for safety and future growth.
Backup Time
To calculate UPS battery backup time, use the formula: Backup Time (hours) = (Battery Capacity in Ah × Battery Voltage × Efficiency) ÷ Total Load in Watts. Standard efficiency is about 80% to 85%. A higher load shortens runtime, while larger batteries or external packs extend it.
AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation)
Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) stabilizes incoming high or low voltage without draining the internal battery. It extends battery life and protects sensitive electronics during brownouts or surges, making a line-interactive UPS essential for regions with unstable power grids.
